Our learning in science is theme based and makes use of children’s natural curiosity. We aim to develop skills such as exploration, observation, questioning and recording whilst paying due regard to health and safety issues.

Children learn in these areas mainly through a well thought out series of investigations which encourage children to think, predict and then rationalize on the outcomes. Thus there is a focus on experimental and investigative science with children gaining first hand experience through practical tasks.

In the Foundation Stage, science is part of the ‘Understanding the World’ area of learning and a vital element of the outdoor continuous provision. Cross curricular links are made wherever possible.

In Key Stage 1 children investigate and learn about the use of different every day materials, plants, animals including humans and living things and their habitats as per the 2014 curriculum.

Children are encouraged, through enquires, to ask questions and to predict what will happen, giving reasons. They are taught to comment on their observations using relevant technical vocabulary.
