Week Beginning 18/1/21

Monday 18th January 2021

This week we will be learning about a significant person in history. We will be learning about Neil Armstrong who was the first man to walk on the moon.

English/History task

Read through the information about Neil Armstrong with your child. Discuss the information and the order in which these things happen. Pay close attention to the dates. Discuss the year that we are in now, discuss that Neil Armstrong was born in 1930 and we are now in 2021. Explain that there are one hundred years in each century.

Help your child to complete the timeline of events in Neil Armstrong’s history. Ensure that they understand that a timeline shows the order that events take place. Encourage them to look at the dates and use their number knowledge to work out which event comes next. If you are unable to print these then your child can use a piece of paper to draw the timeline and write the event underneath. After you they have completed this ask them to answer the questions on the second resource to find out what they have learnt. These can also be written on paper.

Tuesday 19th January 2021

Ask your child what they remember about Neil Armstrong. Look at the information again from yesterday. Would they like to find out anything else about him? Together use the internet to find out something else.

Support your child with completing the worksheet. This can be done on a piece of paper if you prefer. Can they use their work from yesterday to help them? Ensure that they are writing in full sentences, using capital letters, full stops and phonics in their writing.

Wednesday 20th January 2021

Today’s task is a reading and comprehension task. Your child will need to read the text and look carefully at the pictures to answer the questions. The task involves some inference, meaning they will need to use clues and their own ideas to answer some of the questions.

Thursday 21st January 2021

Now that you have learnt about Neil Armstrong going to space what do you think it would be like to travel there? How do you think Neil Armstrong may have felt? What might he have seen when he was in his rocket or on the moon?

For today's task can you imagine you were about to blast off into space. Can you write a recount of what you think it might be like. You might want to role play this first. Maybe you could start by saying the countdown 3,2,1 Blast off!!!

I might write a recount like this:

3,2,1 Blast off! I zoomed into space. My heart was beating quickly. I looked out of the window and saw the earth disappearing below me.

Have a go yourself using the words and picture on the sheet to help you.
